The Bible Reading Plan You Were Looking for

(even if you didn't realize it)

He wanted to do it right. He really did. We’ll call him Nick.

He’d read the Bible before, of course — sometimes big portions of it. Nick knew it was important. But the “This is the year I’m going to read all of it, all the way through!” plan always fell apart on contact with reality. His calendar, his responsibilities, his distractions, and — if he’s honest with himself — his personality inevitably either kept him from getting started or stopped him before he got very far.

At first he just assumed he could treat the Scriptures like any other book. When he considered how fast he’d gotten through the Harry Potter books, he figured the Bible shouldn’t take too long. So he opened to page 1 and started reading. Genesis went pretty fast. Exodus was interesting, but it started slowing down by the end. After that he hit a wall: he just couldn’t get through Leviticus. Though he was tempted to skip or skim, he figured that would mean he wasn’t really reading the whole Bible. After a week or two of trying to get himself psyched up to power through, he called it quits. He didn’t need the stress. “Maybe next year.”

The “Read through the Bible in a Year” plan his church suggested everyone do together sounded simple enough: just read so much every day and after 365 days you’ll be done. But there was that really busy weekend away, and the week he was sick, too many times he was just too tired to stay awake while reading (Deuteronomy, this time). He just fell too far behind, and the thought of all that catching up was just too discouraging. Doing it along with everyone else was supposed to help him stay on track, but soon he just felt shame and guilt for not keeping up. Less than two months in, he’d already given up.

Chances are that nothing about Nick’s story surprises you. You may have had the same kind of experience — or you know someone who did. Whether you’re just trying to learn about Christianity from its sourcebook, a new believer determined to learn more about the faith, or a long-time Christian convinced it’s well past time for you to read through the entire Bible, you’ve likely met resistance — maybe external, from your obligations or interruptions to your schedule; maybe internal, from fatigue, distractions, or a struggle with self-discipline — and it frustrates you. You had a great plan and even better intentions, and instead you end up with stress, disappointment, and perhaps even guilt or shame.

But your story can be better that. Your plans and intentions can bring success instead of stress.

The key is the right kind of plan— one that takes reality into account, that treats the Bible as the unique book it is, and that can be customized to fit your style and schedule. Because what works for other people doesn’t necessarily work for you, and the important thing is to meet your goal of reading the whole Bible, not keeping up with someone else’s calendar.
